The Philippines Experience at Christmas

For most of us brought up in Western societies, Christmas long ago became a commercial extravaganza. Over recent decades the commercial impetus has intensified, with Christmas coming to the shops earlier and earlier, until now it arrives in full frontal mode, as soon as the kids go back to school after the summer holidays.

Each decade that has passed since the 1950s has seen bigger, brighter and more extravagant Christmas decorations, both indoors and outdoors. For those who love Christmas lights and other decors, that's great, but there's another side to the story. Decorating the home has become an obligation, which for the very poor can be something of a problem, as neighbors and friends try to outdo each other.

Perhaps the greater problem, though, can be with Christmas gifts. Children have developed greater and greater expectations over the years, and this brings with it pressures on adults, and parents in particular, to pile as many gifts as possible under the Christmas tree, whether they can afford it or not. Often, poorer families cannot afford it, and the financial pressures, fed by the social pressures, mount as Christmas Day nears. All these pressures are fueled, of course, by intense advertising from September through to December 25. It is little wonder that the days after Christmas are a peak time for family breakups.

Due to the fact that most Western children expect some wonderful Christmas gifts, it is no surprise to many when they get them. Sadly, many will never learn to fully appreciate the acts of giving and receiving gifts. Once a gift becomes a routine obligation, it is no longer a gift, but a token. True generosity cannot be found in such tokens.

Hopefully, many poor and rich families will have a meaningful and enjoyable Christmas in the UK, where I come from, and in the US. Poor families, in particular, will find the financial pressures strongest, but it may well be that the poorer children will be more appreciative.

Maybe some rich families will experience the fate of a birthday gift to a teenage friend of my son in England. On receiving a top of the range hi-fi system, probably worth about $3000, as a gift, he trashed it a week later, simply because he was bored. I suspect it is less likely that a teenager from a poor family would do the same.

Christmas in the Philippines

Since 2000, all my Christmases have been spent here in the Philippines. After moving here, I soon found what true poverty was, and that, despite all the moans, there is no real poverty in the UK. The "poor" of the UK and US would pass as rich in the Philippines.

My life has been enriched in many ways through spending 6 years here and getting to understand Filipinos and their way of life. I have been touched by the generosity of the very poor, having visited many ordinary, spartan homes of the desperately poor. For example, one morning I paid a visit to the mother of a friend. She had no food in the home, and I knew the family were often short of food and went hungry. Unbeknown to me, though, a neighbor was preparing what little food her family had to ensure that I had lunch, despite the fact that they knew I could go and buy what I wanted to eat any time, and from anywhere. I knew, too, that the family whose food I ate for lunch, was even poorer than that of my friend. That family would be going hungry that evening, which made me appreciate the hospitality so much I can never forget it.

When it comes to the approach to Christmas, Filipinos lap it all up. They have a festive fun-loving spirit anyway, so Christmas is just another excuse. As in the UK, the start of September starts the countdown to Christmas Day, in the stores and on TV. On September 1 here I was woken at 5am by some distant, but rather loud, music. Once I had come to my senses, I realized it was Christmas music. I assumed then it was an individual with a new CD, and that it would be a one-off. However, I was wrong. It is now mid-November as I write this, and that music (yes, exactly the same) is played every day. Now, I realize it is not an individual at all, but coming from a nearby military base. Each morning, a bugle blasts out the First Post, and then the Christmas music is switched on.

Despite the proliferation of Christmas advertising, and music, Filipinos do not seem to succumb to any pressure to spend too much money over Christmas. There is no expectation of any gift, and I am sure many children never get an Xmas gift in their lives. Yet, people make the most of Christmas in their own way, and it is important family time. The Christianity of the Philippines is probably far stronger than any Western country, so the religious significance of Christmas is still paramount.

The combination of Filipino generosity, and lack of expectation of a Christmas gift led me to write a Christmas story last year. I have learned much about generosity and kindliness since I came here, and for that, I have the Filipino nature to thank. In a way, the story was a way of encapsulating what I had learned, and to admit that Western adults can learn an awful lot, even from a Filipino child. The story, aimed at adults and older children, tells of a 7-year-old girl, living in a nipa hut on the edge of the Palawan rainforest, who has never had a Christmas gift before; never expected one, and never complained. When she finally does receive a gift, one that she knows with certainty came from Santa Claus, she is faced with what most Western children would find a terrible dilemma. The action she took expresses the true spirit of Christmas and true generosity, in typical Filipino fashion.

One thing Filipinos do splash out their sparse cash on is Christmas decorations, especially Christmas lights. It seems even the poorest of homes will try to spread a bit of Christmas cheer with lights from November onwards, and very nice they look too. Puerto Princesa, where we live, is already preparing for its Christmas display and events this year. We cannot wait to see what will be added to the wonderful displays of last December. Poor or not, gifts or not, Christmas has its own tropical magic in the Philippines.

The Christmas Wish List Trend Has Begun

At the time of this writing, Thanksgiving has not yet happened, yet a quick search on Twitter shows that people are already discussing their what they want this holiday in 140 characters or less.

Some people have short lists and post them all in one post. For example, one Twitter user lists, " My Christmas list: Wooden cooking spoons, coffee table, potato peeler. That is all." Another is shooting big, but only asking for one thing, "my parents told me to do my christmas list and i put down shortlist!" Others are posting their holiday wishes on other websites or blogs and are including the URL to that post in their tweet.

Other Twitter users are still contemplating their lists, as shown by these tweets, "what to list in my Christmas Wishlist??? hmmmm..." and " working on my christmas list!" Still others are adding items to their requests,

There are some Twitter u, users who are announcing that they are working on getting others presents, "Checking the first item off my Christmas shopping list, a gift for my nephew. Thanks and "well, my mom just sent me her Christmas list. now I'm making a Disney calendar because i have no money."

So, now the problem becomes, if you are going to tweet your gift requests directly to Santa Claus, which Twitter account goes to the real St. N? A people search on the microblogging site returns many users claiming to be Santa Claus. Many are listed as being in the North Pole, while others state that Santa is living in Lake Tahoe, Finland, and even the Philippines. So, maybe you should just tweet them all... you never can be too careful.

Early Christmas Shop For the Best Christmas Gifts

Do you promise yourself each and every year that you will get all your Christmas shopping done early so that you can have a relatively stress free holiday season, only to find yourself shopping for last minute Christmas presents a day or two before Christmas day and having no idea what to get or where to get it? Proper planning is important. I am sure that you can come up with at least ten minutes a day or week to think about your Christmas list. The only way to have a stress free holiday season is to early Christmas shop for the best Christmas gifts.

As we get closer to the holiday season, you need to find a couple of minutes to compile a list if you haven't done so already for the best Christmas gifts. Last minute shopping does not allow you to find the best Christmas gifts for your friends and family. A thoughtless gift is worse than no gift at all. Getting the best Christmas gifts requires that you put some thought into the task and early Christmas shop for the best Christmas gifts.

If you have no idea what holiday gifts to get and what would make great holiday gifts, find suggestions on or offline on the best gift ideas and where to find them or pay attention to any hints dropped by family and friends in order to prepare a list of the best Christmas presents.

Make this the year that you early Christmas shoppers. Most holiday shoppers usually wait until the very last minute which is seen with the crowds of people at the mall and other shopping centers and the resulting stress. Waiting until December to find Christmas presents also means that if you are using a credit card, you will have a large credit card bill in the new year to pay off. Early Christmas shopping for the best Christmas gifts allows you to spread out your expenses on Christmas presents.

Online shopping is continuing to explode and while you do not deal with the crowds, you need to place the orders early to ensure that you receive the best Christmas presents well before Christmas day especially if you need to mail some of these holiday gifts. Plan to shop early to avoid the stress of wondering whether you will receive the Christmas presents before Christmas. Although some online stores can gift wrap and mail the Christmas present to the recipient for you, I prefer my own wrapping and you do not want the recipients to receive the Christmas presents too early or too late.

Various stores and other outlets should have information on some of the best gift ideas to help you with your Christmas list. You also need to set a budget that you stick to when reviewing the best gift ideas.

This information on the best Christmas gifts usually contains lists of the best Christmas gifts for men, the best Christmas gifts for women and the best Christmas gifts for girls and boys in order to help you come up with ideas on great holiday gifts to fill out your Christmas list. Once you spend some time compiling this Christmas list early of the best Christmas gifts and made the purchases, you can then have a relaxing and stress-free holiday season because would have done all your Christmas shopping early.

One of the best ways to Christmas shop early for the best Christmas gifts that you can keep in mind for next year's Christmas since it is already late in the year 2010, is to shop in the few days after Christmas day 2010 for for the following year's holiday gifts since a vast number of stores both off and online have various sales to prepare for the new year by getting rid of excess inventory which means that you will be able to get some of the best Christmas gifts for the following year.

Some of the best gift ideas for 2010 will more or less still apply for the coming year. For electronics, you will probably have to wait until the coming year before making purchases because updates occur frequently in this area.

Another tip to help you with early Christmas shopping for the best Christmas gifts once you have reviewed any lists showing the best gift ideas, is to purchase two gifts instead of one gift for the people on your list at the time of their birthday so that you can give them one gift as a birthday gift and the second gift at Christmas time.

These are only a few tips to keep in mind that will ensure that you have a relatively stress free time at Christmas because all your Christmas presents would have been purchased and wrapped since you properly planned and put a lot of thought into your gift giving and allowed yourself enough time to come up with the best Christmas gifts for your family and friends.

Good Investments for Pinoys Abroad

It is a sad fact that Filipinos have limited knowledge when it comes to investments. Yes, probably the only investment we know of is business. We do not even consider saving in a bank as an investment. In entirety, we see banks as a place where we put our money and get it from time to time. We do not have a sophisticated definition of what truly is an investment.

In a place like the Philippines, Filipinos need to diversify their options for investments. Having a business is not your only choice. As a matter of fact, there are several investment schemes, good ones by the way, that can surely make your hard-earned money rolling into piles especially for Filipinos abroad or the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). As an OFW it is your prerogative to save and invest your money because working in other countries is not permanent and the regular salary you receive may not last. To back yourself up and your family, you need to put your money into financial investments that will increase its value.

Take note: never entertain financial scams that are too good to be true. Secure your money to trusted and well-recognized companies which will take care of your money.

Treasury Bills (T-Bills)

Treasury bills are offered in your bank. This is a long-term investment and its minimum amount of investment is P100, 000.00. Its interest rate is higher than that of time deposits. This is investing your money in portfolios that are used for government purposes. This is a low-risk investment since it is backed by the Philippine government.

Unit Investment Trust Funds (UITF)

UITF is also offered in your local banks. This is an open-ended trust fund which investors can buy and sell their units after the minimum holding period. This is a high-risk investment where you should only invest money that you can afford to lose. If you invest a large amount of money, chances are you will also receive high returns. You must educate yourself beforehand on this type of investment so you will know when to stick around or when to sell your funds.

Mutual Funds

Mutual funds come in different types. Among these that are stock funds, bond funds, and balanced funds. Whichever fund you might want to take part in will depend on how aggressive you are as an investor. It means that if you are willing to stake higher investments, you can opt for stock funds. But if you are conservative, then choose bond funds. There is no guarantee that you will always get high returns from this investment since this will always depend on the country's economic condition. This is also a long-term investment.

Overseas Filipino Workers can also invest their money in stocks, real estate businesses, and insurance investments like educational plan, pension plan, and protection plan. As an investor, you must be aware that investments should be measured in terms of risks, returns, and liquidity. Only participate in investments with 2 to 4% returns above the annual inflation rate. Never go for those investments with 2% returns a month because it may be just a scam. In investments, the higher the return, the higher the risks.

How can you make your dream come true?

In this digital age, to succeed and to create your own success story, you must take a few simple steps. It could significantly help you make tremendous progress towards your goals. At first glance, it may sound kind of frightening, but in reality, it is precisely the opposite.

These necessary steps provide you with the best chance to take advantage of your skills, abilities, talents, and effort both in professional and personal life. It allows you to get on the horse and grip the reins of your future success story with confidence. And in doing so, you can lead all of your drive towards accomplishing your objectives.

From Dreams to Success Story
When you look at it carefully, dreamers always win, once they follow through with actions of course. They are the high achievers because they have the passion for succeeding. Dreamers are passionate people who take risks and make daring moves, so that their dreams may become a reality.

Therefore, if you are a dreamer attracted to whatever success story you envision for yourself, you have to learn a few ways to visualize your future. Why? The reason is that you need to have a clear vision of what your life is going to be like.

So, you must take a snap photo of what your success story is like for you. Imagine all the details such as where do you live, how much you are making, how many employees do you have, are you sitting down with world leaders or delivering a speech on a stage, and hold on to that snapshot.

Visualize Your Success Story
By holding on to that vision like it is an obsession, you will subconsciously start making decisions that will get you there. Then you have to write your objectives down on paper each day. I do each morning and evening. And then work hard to make your goals a success story.

Visualize Yourself
To create your own success story, you have to take a snapshot of yourself and your appearance.

See the clothes you are wearing. Look at the colors you have on. Imagine the difference between now and then. Realize how you feel. See if you are smiling, severe or thoughtful.

These snapshots allow you to identify the kind of clothes you want for yourself.

Read about Any Other Success Story
You have to read and learn from other people's success stories that they all started from nothing. Most people always see and know the success but not many look at where successful people came from and what they had to do to get where they are at today.

Imagine Your Surroundings
Like I said earlier, you need to imagine all the details about your surroundings. You have to see such things as where do you live, how much money you make, how many people work for you, are you the CEO of your own business, are you sitting down or on a stage giving a speech?

These things will trigger your subconscious to push you forward to higher levels of success and create your own success story.

See Who Is at Your Side
When you look ahead, who do you see beside you, supporting you? Visualize if there are people who were already at your side while you were struggling. Imagine if the individuals that are working for you. See how many children you have, if you give back to the community around you and make a difference in other's lives.

Picture Your New Lifestyle
In any success story, there is always some reference to a change of priorities in life. So, picture how your life has changed. See the new perspective you hold for yourself. Imagine the new routines you have. Visualize your new lifestyle and how you live.

Visualizing your success is an essential part of getting you to that point. As I said before, it is already half of the battle won.

Create Your Own Success Story
Next, if you realize what your keys to change are, visualize what you want apparently and then take action, you will be well on your way to make your success story a reality.

What Christmas Means to Me

Divorce is very hard when you have children. It is even harder when you are a very religious family that is filled with ministers and missionaries. Your very important religious life comes crashing all around you because as far as your family and church are concerned you are a terrible sinner. When approaching the holidays that celebrate the life and death of Jesus Christ, it forces you to rethink how you will celebrate Christmas. You can't go to the church you grew up in because you are no longer accepted. You don't celebrate with your extended family as a couple because they will not accept the person you love so you are forced to go separately to family celebrations. I guess what I am really saying is 'what Christmas means to me' is not what it may mean to other Christian families.

Before the label of homosexuality became my life, I could hardly wait for the Christmas celebration to begin. I loved having the extended family holiday meal. Buying presents and making gifts for family and friends was not only fun but something I looked forward to all year long! Finding just the right gift for my children and seeing their approval Christmas morning brought back wonderful memories. It was truly a December of fun activities filled with family, church events and lots of holiday parties. But this was not the case anymore! Now I was forced to celebrate Christmas without the favor of the people who use to be a big part of my life.

When I was divorced, I did not receive residential custody of my children even though it was proven I was the better parent, but I did get the Christmas holiday with them. My wife, Tori had sole custody of her son, but her parents refused to accept our relationship. They threatened to take Brad away from her if our relationship was ever discovered. As a result, Tori was forced to celebrate every Christmas day with them. My parents gave me an open invitation to celebrate Christmas with my children at their house along with my brothers and sisters families. This I did rarely because being around the judgmental eyes they always cast in my direction was unpleasant. It wasn't a Christmas celebration that was good for me or my children. So Tori and I were forced to start a new tradition for the Christmas holiday alone without extended family members.

Tori and I gave up many things when we became a couple, but the one thing we never gave up was Christmas. We both loved the holiday and celebrating it with our children. It may not have been like it was before, but for the most part, it was better. Tori and I ran a very successful upholstery and design business. We were so successful that we had the ability to give presents to our children like we never had before. They were the first to have the latest toys and games. They had the best clothes and we treated them to blockbuster movies and special Christmas Broadway plays. What we couldn't give them in extended family Christmases we made up with expensive restaurants and just plain fun!

We made Christmas very special. Tori and I started decorating in November and we added one new decoration to our home every year. One year the kids and I painted two giant nutcrackers we made out of plywood to adorn either side of our front door outside and lit them up with lights. Another year we decided we would decorate two trees in the house. Every year we added new ornaments to each tree. We loved Christmas so much that we decorated every room in the house in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. We had a manger with baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph displayed prominently on the fireplace and every year we added one more animal or person.

You would think that Tori and I had every right to turn our backs on our faith because of the persecution we suffered from the church and our religious families, but we didn't! We celebrated Christmas! Every Christmas Eve we read the story of Jesus' birth to our children. We prayed and thanked God for our Christmas meal. We practiced our faith and we never gave up on Jesus Christ as our Savior.

Luke 2: 11: "This very day in David's town your Savior was born- Christ the Lord!"

Jesus was our Savior. He lifted us up even when society denied us the ability to marry. Jesus provided far and above our needs because we never let go of Him. Instead, we changed into better people. We loved our neighbors and family unconditionally. We gave our tithe to City Union Mission to help the poor and homeless. We gave to ministries to help the families of prisoners. We were not victims, but servants of the Highest God.

Matthew 16: 24-27, "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to come with me, he must forget himself, carry his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it: but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Will a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life? Of course not! There is nothing he can give to regain his life. For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his deeds."

We were destined to be a family. It was a truth that God affirmed to us over and over again through the blessings He gave our family. Our extended families may have rejected us on earth, but our Heavenly Father did not. God has an eternal reward for us because we did not give up and let go of Him. What Christmas means to me is a blessing that I didn't know I would receive until I participated in the life God predestined for me to live.
