Onions were historically used as a preventative medicine during epidemics of cholera and the plague. They were apparently eaten by Roman emperor Nero as a cure for colds during 68 AD., and its reputation has made onions a popular component in the diets of many countries such as the Philippines.
February to March is a very important month for the farmers here in Bambang and Aritao Nueva Vizcaya because it’s harvest time. The variety of onions that they plant here in Nueva Vizcaya is called the Red Pinoy.
Joner Sapigao and Marlon Floresca of Aritao Nueva Vizcaya had put up an onion buying station that engages in buying onion. During the peak season, they can harvest more than 6,000 bags(buriki) of onion. The Red Pinoy onion variety went beyond the expected quality output“, said Sapigao in an interview with CV Northern Star staff.
The cleaning of onions needs several helpers to finish at an early time, then they will load to an elf cargo truck for transport in Malabon Metro Manila where the wholesaler of onion is located.
Sapigao and Floresca wish that this dreaded covid- 19 will stop, so they can deliver their products unhampered.
